Rep. Chandler's statement on 2014 supplemental budget

'It's not a perfect budget, but it is a good first step in gaining back the taxpayers' trust,' says Chandler

Rep. Bruce Chandler, R-Granger, and ranking Republican on the House Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement regarding today's 2014 supplemental budget agreement:

“I believe we achieved our goal of producing a supplemental budget that does not rely on new or increased taxes, is sustainable, contains a healthy ending fund balance and continues the budget stability from last year's operating budget. I'm grateful House Republicans were allowed at the negotiating table to ensure these priorities were met.

“I cannot overemphasize the importance of stability in our state budgets. The four-year balanced budget requirement we passed last year played a critical role in keeping additional spending to a minimum. Without that requirement, some in Olympia may have been tempted to spend even more.

“With the economy continuing to struggle, we all know our next biennial budget is going to come with many challenges. Today's proposal places us in a strong position to meet those challenges. It's not a perfect budget, but it is a good first step in gaining back the taxpayers' trust that we will meet those budget challenges by keeping their hard work, wishes and wallets in mind.”
