Olympia High School student serves in the Legislature
Olympia High School sophomore Adam Carter paged in the Washington State House of Representatives Feb. 19-24. He was sponsored by 15th District state representative Bruce Chandler.
“I was happy to be able to sponsor Adam this year,” said Chandler, R-Granger. “The page program encourages students to become civically engaged and gain firsthand experience in the workings of the Legislature.”
During his week at the Capitol, Adam attended page school daily to understand the operations and actions of the Legislature. In addition, Adam was able to take part in a mock bill exercise in which he drafted legislation and argued for its passage.
Speaking on his bill, which would lower tuition fees at Washington's universities, Adam said: “By 2018, 67 percent of all jobs in the state will require a post-secondary degree, but if the cost of getting into college is too high, we won't have enough people to get those jobs.”
The 15-year-old also served an important role in the Legislature delivering documents to legislators and staff on the floor of the House and throughout the Capitol campus.
Each week, students 14- to 16-years-old from across the state serve in the legislative page program. They must have a legislative member as a sponsor, as well as permission from their school and parents. To learn more about the page program, visit the Web site.
